Sara VanDerBeek
Sara VanDerBeek is a New York-based artist best known for a body of work that routinely incorporates ancient artifacts, hand-made sculptures, and photography to encourage a personal experience of the passage of time. VanDerBeek's use of light in her photographs imagines how her subjects would cast shadows if they were being lit by the sun moving across the sky. One can't help but associate a time of day with Sara's work and this very intentional time stamp gives the work a sense of historical importance. Asking more questions than it answers, the work of Sara VanDerBeek is a kind of disjointed chronicle of civilization and its accomplishments.

Sara VanDerBeek (b. 1976) has been the subject of solo exhibitions at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Cleveland, the Hammer Museum, Los Angeles, the Whitney Museum, New York, Fondazione Memmo, Rome, Metro Pictures, New York, and the Approach, London. She is in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, The Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles and the Brooklyn Musuem of Art.

Sara VanDerBeek is represented by Metro Pictures, New York and Altman Siegel, San Francisco

Poster: 30 x 24"

Gallery Frame: 30 x 24"

Shadowbox Frame: 32 x 26"

"Roman Women I" was made during an artist's residency in Rome in 2013. Like much of Sara VanDerBeek's work, the photograph navigates historical terrain while also engaging the present. Using only the ambient light of the museum to illuminate the ancient female figure's bust, the artist recalls the transitional light of the early evening, symbolically a time of change. The strong pinks and blues are achieved by omitting yellow from her photo process and are a nod to the original bright pigments used to paint the sculpture when it was first made.

Poster on 80 lb silk McCoy archival paper

Printed in the USA

10% of every poster purchased helps fund art classes for kids.

Read more about Sara here.
